Collection: Martin Guitars

Authorized Martin dealer

C.F. Martin & Co. has made acoustic guitars since 1833 and is still family-owned, six generations on, in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. Martin gave the world the dreadnought and pioneered X-bracing, and its D-28, D-18, 000 and OM models helped define the steel-string acoustic sound. From Road Series workhorses to Standard Series icons, artist signatures and limited editions, the in-stock Martins on this page are in our Peterborough store now, and each one is inspected and set up by our tech before it ships.

The Martin story

Nearly two centuries of acoustic guitar history, in five quick facts.

  1. 1833 Founded in New York

German-born guitar maker Christian Frederick Martin Sr. opens his shop in New York City. In 1839 he moves to Nazareth, Pennsylvania, still Martin's home today.

  2. 1840s X-bracing

C.F. Martin pioneers X-bracing under the top. It later let Martins take the tension of steel strings, and it's still the basis of most steel-string acoustics.

  3. 1916 The dreadnought

Martin's big-bodied guitar, named after the battleship HMS Dreadnought, is first built for the Oliver Ditson Company. Martin-branded dreadnoughts follow in 1931, leading to the D-18 (mahogany) and D-28 (rosewood).

  4. 1929 The OM and 14 frets

The Orchestra Model puts a 14-fret neck on the 000 body. By 1934 the dreadnought had 14 frets too, and that became the modern steel-string layout.

  5. Today Six generations

Still family-owned and operated, six generations on, and still based in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.

Martin model names & series guide

Model names, decoded

Most Martin names are body size + style number. D = dreadnought, 000 = auditorium, OM = Orchestra Model (a 000 body with a longer scale), 00 = grand concert, GPC = Grand Performance cutaway. In the Standard Series, 18 means mahogany back and sides and 28 means East Indian rosewood with more ornate trim. An H (as in HD-28) adds herringbone trim, and an E (as in D-10E) means built-in electronics.

Martin series at a glance

  • X Series & Junior: tough, affordable Martins, great for travel, practice and first guitars.
  • Road Series: gig-ready Martins with solid-wood tops, most with built-in electronics.
  • 15 Series: all-mahogany guitars with a warm, woody, uncomplicated sound.
  • 16 Series: a step up in tone and features, including the GPC-16E, D-16E and 000-16 StreetMaster.
  • Standard Series: the icons: D-28, D-18, HD-28, 000-28 and OM-28, built in Nazareth.
  • Modern Deluxe: classic Martin shapes with vintage-inspired tone and modern upgrades.
  • Authentic Series: faithful recreations of Martin's pre-war classics.
  • Custom Shop, signature & limited editions: small runs, artist models and one-offs.

I recently purchased a guitar from Maar's Music and I can honestly say it was one of the best customer experiences I've ever had.

I love the guitar, but honestly, the experience left such a lasting impression that I'm already looking for an excuse to buy another one. If you're in the Peterborough area and need anything music-related, do yourself a favour and visit Maar's. You won't regret it. I cannot say enough about this fantastic store.
