The Taylor story
Five decades of acoustic guitar innovation from Southern California, in six quick facts.
-
1974
A small shop in Lemon Grove
On October 15, 1974, Bob Taylor, Kurt Listug and partner Steve Schemmer take over the American Dream guitar shop in Lemon Grove, California. Bob is the builder, so his name goes on the headstock. Taylor has been based in El Cajon, California since 1992.
-
1994
The Grand Auditorium
Introduced as a 20th-anniversary limited edition, the mid-size Grand Auditorium becomes the signature Taylor shape: easy to strum, flatpick or fingerpick.
-
1999
The NT neck
Taylor's patented New Technology neck changes how a bolt-on neck meets the body. The result is a precise, stable neck angle that's easy to adjust and service over the life of the guitar.
-
2016
The Ebony Project
Co-owner of the Crelicam ebony mill in Cameroon since 2011, Taylor launches the Ebony Project with the Congo Basin Institute to research and replant African ebony. Its Urban Wood work (2020) turns retired California street trees into guitars, such as Urban Ironbark.
-
2018
V-Class bracing
Andy Powers, who joined in 2011 as Bob Taylor's hand-picked successor in guitar design, debuts patented V-Class bracing. Taylor says it improves volume, sustain and pitch accuracy compared with traditional X-bracing.
-
2021
Employee-owned
Taylor becomes 100% employee-owned. In 2022 Andy Powers is named President and CEO, keeping his role as Chief Guitar Designer, while Bob and Kurt become senior advisors.
Taylor model numbers & series guide
Model numbers, decoded
Most Taylor acoustics have a three-digit number. The first digit is the series, which sets the back-and-side woods and trim (a 414ce is a 400 Series guitar).
The second digit gives the string count and the top wood: 1 = 6-string with a softwood top (spruce or cedar), 2 = 6-string with a hardwood top (mahogany or koa), 5 = 12-string with a softwood top, 6 = 12-string with a hardwood top.
The third digit is the body shape: 0 Dreadnought, 1 Grand Theater, 2 Grand Concert, 4 Grand Auditorium (Super Auditorium on Gold Label models), 6 Grand Symphony, 7 Grand Pacific, 8 Grand Orchestra.
After the number, c = cutaway and e = onboard electronics; N = nylon strings. Extra letters mark a wood or finish variant, such as -K (koa), SB (sunburst) or BLK (black).
Examples from our shelves: 322ce = 300 Series, 6-string with a mahogany top, Grand Concert, cutaway, electronics. 250ce-BLK Plus = 200 Series Plus, 12-string with a spruce top, Dreadnought, in black.

I recently purchased a guitar from Maar's Music and I can honestly say it was one of the best customer experiences I've ever had.
I love the guitar, but honestly, the experience left such a lasting impression that I'm already looking for an excuse to buy another one. If you're in the Peterborough area and need anything music-related, do yourself a favour and visit Maar's. You won't regret it. I cannot say enough about this fantastic store.
